RE: Immunizations
Marie and Dwight:
When I inquired about separate immunizations from my Doctor, he didn't hesitate in the slightest. He said that all he needed was for me to let me know when I wanted them done and he would order them in for me.

I completely agree with the two previous posters…..Glad to see Thimerosal and Mercury being discussed here. While I will not force my opinions upon you, here are couple of good sites to continue your research.

My son was diagnosed last month. In response to the question regarding vaccination;
I cannot prove that vaccinations have caused autism. But, if I had half the information I have now I would never have allowed my son to be vaccinated at such early an age.
The most astounding statistic for me was that approx. one out of 15,000 non-vaccinated children have been diagnosed with autism yet these statistics rise to 1 in 166 vaccinated children are diagnosed with autism.
The new study, carried out by American paediatrician Dr Fouad Yazbak and Dr G S Goldman, tracks levels of autism in Denmark from 1980 – seven years before the MMR vaccine was introduced in Denmark – until 2002. Prevalence of autism among children aged from 5 to 9 stood at 8.38 cases per 100,000 in the pre-vaccine years of 1980 to 1986, and then rose to 71.43 cases by the year 2000.
Dr Samy Suissa of McGill University found that the rate of autism increases to a high of 27.3 cases per 100,000 two years after vaccination compared with just 1.45 cases in non-vaccinated children.
(Sources: Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, 2004; 3: 70-5; New England Journal of Medicine, 2002; 347: 1477-82).
I believe that vaccinations, the increase in types of vaccinations (flu, Hep B etc.) and underdeveloped immune system and some genetic predisposition all factor into the equation.
Further, you can wait to vaccinate your children, and obtain thimerosal free vaccinations.
Here are some links so that you may also do your own research.

March 2, 2005 at 11:15 pm #4277Stella LiParticipantIn response to Marie and Dwight:
I have a 2 yr old. My 4 yr old has ASD. What I know from reading books, articles, consultation with paediatricians, family doctor, paediatric nurses… the vaccine MMR may be suspicious but there is really no scientific proof of direct relation to ASD.However, as a mom, once I know my son has ASD I didn't go for my then 18 mos's immunization for MMR, just to be safe. She has one shot of ?DDT at 18 mos but I'll postpone the booster MMR till she is 3 or 4. She already had ~90% immunization from the first MMR shot at 12 mos (I didn't know at that time), so I am not worried about her getting Measles, Mump, or Rubella now.
If I were you, I'll weigh the pos and cons – like will the possibility of having MMR outweigh the possibility of having ASD, or vice versa.
That's my input from a mom's point of view.Good luck!
March 2, 2005 at 11:06 pm #4278Claire SpencerMemberHi Marie and Dwight,
I believe that my son's MMR vaccination contributed to his autism (but was not the sole cause). Unless they've changed the schedules, the MMR shots are not until 12/18 months, and those are the ones that it may be beneficial to split into single "doses" rather than having three live viruses injected at once. You may also see if you can find someone doing the nasal spray instead of the injections – it is supposed to be safer as well. The DPT shots that come first have a risk of mercury (thimerosal) in them, though I believe that is more of a problem in the states than in Canada. I would ask to read the label on the serum before having it injected to confirm that it contains no thimerosal. It is up to you to determine what risks you are willing to take when the time for MMR roles around. Personally, I wish my son had never had it although I know the diseases are also dangerous. You should also make sure your child is absolutely 100% before you have them immunized. If they've been sick recently their systems may be more easily "injured" by the vaccinations. Good luck!

March 2, 2005 at 10:15 pm #4279Hello,
We are looking for some parent/families experiences with immunizations for a sibling of a child with ASD. Our 3 month (just) old is at that point and our doctor is strongly advocating immunizations.
We are still in the researching, gathering info. stage and are open to other parents' stories.
Can anyone share their experiences of how you handled this? Has anyone gone to Seattle and had single shots, as I understand this is not offered here in Canada and, if so, how was the experience?
Thenks,
Marie and Dwight, parents of Colin
