November 2, 2005 at 12:26 am #4043David ChanMemberI got to share this with everyone, last night was Halloween, and it took a long time before Mr. P got into the Holiday. This Kid hated Halloween because of the firecrakers. And you had to go out in thedark. Well, this year he harrassed us within an inch of our lives to be spock. OK, spock it is then. We looked all over for the right shirt, but we wound up at Dunbar Costumes, and we rented him the shirt, and bought a set of ears.
After school came, and we were all getting ready to go trick or treating, while we were wating for Miss V to get ready, Mr. P said to me, hey dad, this shirt needs to have the star trek sign on it, he was right, it didin't come with the star trek logo on the shirt. In any case, he kept on saying it, and I"m like oh please, this will have to do, it's a rented costume for gosh sake. I turn around, and to my horror he's gone and used a permanent marker, and drew the star trek logo on the shirt. At this point I didn't know whether to jump for joy because he connected so well the shirt with the logo, or be furious because he had just drawn on a rental costume.
So with great reluctance, I took the costume back to the shop, and I told the lady the story. She stopped, and said, "Did he really enjoy Halloween ?" I assured her, and expressed how he really did get it this year. "She said to me, well, if he really enjoyed it, let him keep it", I was almost moved to tears. You know, there are decent people in the world, I just met one of them

October 30, 2005 at 6:39 pm #4044Deleted UserMemberDid anybody read the article in 'The Sun' yesterday about learning difficulties. A presentation on the full range of difficulties, including the 'Grey Area' where giving a name to the condition and organising treatment doesn't seem to be done.
Autism was a smallish circle, compared to others, placed on the far right.

NanaimoTopic: ABA in the Classroom
In this session, parents and aides will share experiences and materials to successfully transition from home to school (including preschool) for children of varying ages and abilities. Topics will include:
* Promoting a positive, productive, child-centered home / school relationship
* How to marry home programs and school expectations in as smooth a way as possible.
* The importance of an IEP that considers all aspects of the childs development (language, academic, social, maladaptive behaviours, self-help skills)
Participants are asked to bring along samples of IEPs and materials that you have used to help your child be successful in the classroom. We plan to have a whole group presentation and discussion, a time to share materials, and a time for parents and aides to meet in their own groups to share ideas.
This will be an open meeting. All are welcome.
Please email diane_t@shaw.ca if you plan to attend, so that we may plan appropriate seating and refreshments.
