June 2, 2015 at 1:55 pm #6386Mike & JeanParticipantMore great news from Medicare for Autism Now! Today, director, Jean Lewis, announced that Maria Kehagias is joining our board. We are delighted to welcome Maria as a director of our organization. She brings a diverse blend of professional expertise infused by her energetic, positive attitude.
For several years, Maria has worked with a number of adolescents and adults across the autism spectrum in the capacity of Special Education Assistant, ABA therapist, Senior Therapist, and Program Director. She has front-line experience with individuals who are very mildly effected to those who are more severe with dual diagnoses requiring very complex treatment programs. She has witnessed first hand the life-changing efficacy of ABA for all individuals with autism and their families. Marias direct experience in the field of ABA, coupled with her more recent interests in public relations and marketing position her very well to oversee and direct our organizations fundraising, event coordination and social media campaigns.
Marias interest in autism treatment advocacy grew when she began to witness the hurdles that families faced when trying to pursue what was their childs right access to healthcare. Why is our country denying our most vulnerable citizens? asks Ms. Kehagias, This is an unacceptable injustice and abuse by neglect.

Dione Costanzo, Director, Autism Support Network, ParentSharon and Dione will lead a presentation and discussion about what ABA can look like in the classroom and will review Surreys journey in establishing an ABA Support Worker program in the district.
The Surrey School District is demonstrating their commitment to meaningful collaboration with the Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) community. In 2006, the ABA Support Worker (ABA SW) job classification was collaboratively developed with input from the ABA community.
ABA SWs are required to complete the ABA SW Certification Program collaboratively developed and offered through Surrey College. Surrey presently employs approximately 170 ABA SWs. A collaborative model that includes other related special education professionals has been embraced by the district. To enhance supports, Surrey has recently hired a District Behaviour Specialist who has BCBA credentials in order to continue to refine their practice and support home team to school team collaboration.
At the district level, an ABA District Advisory body was created in 2006 to ensure opportunities to collaborate and communicate effectively with home teams and community-based consultants.
