Autism Conference Cancelled
Hi Folks,
Ièm very sorry to have to inform you that the Autism Conference scheduled for August 21-23 at Malaspina in Nanaimo has been cancelled due to low enrolment. I am hoping that we can get Drs. Mulick and Villone to agree to separate sessions at a later date during the school year.
Stay tuned.

July 6, 2006 at 3:06 pm #4923Jan NuscheMemberHello,
I am new to this list. My husband and I live in Langley with our 4 children. Our 12 yr old son is Autistic. He was diagnosed just prior to entering kindergarten. Because he is high-functioning, we haven't explored an ABA program to date; however we are now having great difficulties with his school. They have cut his TA support and now want to modify his school program. Not only is the school giving up on my son academically, I see my son becoming segregated from his peers and isolated in the resource room.
I would appreciate hearing from parents who have older children in an ABA program; and also from parents who have engaged Michelle Fagan as a consultant.
And I may as well as throw out all my questions, I'd love to hear from anyone who's gone up against the Langley School District.
Thanks all,
Jan Nusche (jnusche@shaw.ca )

Our son (just turned 5) has just been diagnosed with Aspergers. We
would like to connect with parents with "Aspie" kids.First we'd like to understand what an ABA program customized to
Aspergers specifically would look like, so we can make an informed
decision on which treatment route to take. We only found minimal info on
ABA and Aspergers.Second we'd like to arrange playdates with other Aspie kids around the
same age. We live in Vancouver North shore (willing to commute). If you can help, please email.

or visit http://www.wpga.ca and go to photo gallery, community service and select WPGA Targets Autism.
A new tradition is in the making for Sports Day
Born out of their love of sports and wanting to raise awareness for autism, two grade ten students at West Point Grey Academy decided to harness the captive audience available on the Junior Schools Sports Day. Their idea of WPGA Targets Autism was initiated.
Alireza Harandi and Briana Hungerford set out to raise awareness of autism and how it can affect families. They advertised; collected donations; spoke at the jr. school assemblies and worked through the specific details for their eventnot least of which must have been filling-up over 2,500 water balloons! Thankfully, on Monday June 19th as the students of WPGA were each given five water balloons to throw at their teachers, the event and hard work paid off. The enthusiasm and laughter was infectious for participants and spectators alike!
In total, over $11,685.00 was raised through donations for families in BC living with autism (A huge thank you should also go out to Mrs. Anne Rowland, from The Kids Helping Kids Foundationwhose aim is to foster leadership and encourage kids to make a difference by helping other kids in need– who matched donations which bolstered the final total).
As the event came to a close, Ali and Briana reminded the students that if they meet someone with autism, they should say hello and tell them they threw a water balloon for them. They hope that the raised awareness of autism will help to spark the change in funding that is needed for early intervention and therapy; but in the meantime, many families in BC will benefit from the funds raised.
June 24, 2006 at 6:40 pm #4926Super DadParticipantIssac has already mentioned this before, but here is a nice web site:
http://66.221.49.64/autismfacts/
For quite a while now, I have wanted to respond to some self-proclaimed "autistics" who have been posting on our chat board, but a lot of what I want to say is already here:
http://66.221.49.64/autismfacts/why.html
Here is a quote from the web page:
Question: Why would people adopt an autism diagnosis and claim to be autistic when they are not?
Answer: Although it is impossible to get into the mind set of every misguided, self-proclaimed, purportedly autistic adult, there maybe several reasons to masquerade as an autistic, including, quite possibly, the potential monetary rewards and attention.

June 23, 2006 at 4:56 pm #4927Deleted UserMemberHi my name is Jason and my wifes name is Sacha.
Our 7 year old son Austin was diagnosed with Aspergers on June 20 2006. We always knew he was special but has been flying under the radar.
His school this year has been pushing add or and adhd on us but it wasnt until Jan of this year(2 weeks before his add/adhd testing) that Sacha saw a documentary on Aspergers, it gave her reality chills, it was our son they were describing.
Finally he was diagnosed it was pressure taken of our backs, until the next day when we realized that we were on our own. That day was a whirlwind of phone numbers, dead ends and no help from anyone until I got in contact with Sabrina. She saved me from a breakdown last night and gave me all the info to get started on our journey to make my sons life a better place for him to be in. We also visited the Autism Society of BC on Hastings in Vancouver and found them to be very nice and joined their library which has alot of books that Im sure will be very helpfull in the future. Thank you from new members Jason, Sacha, Austin, and little brother AndonJune 23, 2006 at 4:53 pm #4928Deleted UserMemberHi my name is Jason and my wifes name is Sacha.

We are starting a new program and don't have any experience when it comes to spending the money from funding. Our consultant has given us a list of different learning materials and toys. Can we use the money from funding to purchase these items? What are the rules when it comes to purchasing items for the learning purposes?
We appreciate your input. You can either response on this board or respond to persianvet@hotmail.com.Cheers,
