DianeSeptember 15, 2006 at 1:55 am #4886I would like to request an image for each child with Autism. It can be a photo, a scan of foot prints, orginal drawing or writting from them… Just scan it in and send it to me. Just something that would fit in an 8×8 square. I leave it to you if you want a name or nick-name in the image, but it is NOT required (Also please let me know what province you are in if it is not BC)
I have a couple of us who will be printing on fabric and assembing blocks. Anyone interested in doing any quilting just let me know. (I have sent out a previous design to people but since then have simplified it more so wait for the next email with instructions.)
once again my email is
I will post a link to a photo once we have the first dozen or so blocks done (and know the design will work!)

September 13, 2006 at 7:52 pm #4888Stella LiParticipantHi everyone,
Below is a list of the new library materials at the ASBC library from February to September 2006. The video/DVDs are highly recommended materials. "HARRY" shows the power of behavioral therapy not only for children but for a self-abused adult! However be aware of the initial self-abuse scenes that can be disturbing. The "Model Me Kids" series are valuable video modeling materials for children.
"Teaching Playskills" is a valuable reference of play and playskills that we can teach our children.Call or email me if you want to borrow our new library materials. We also welcome recommendation or donation of library materials.
We may present videos like HARRY in our office once a month. Let me know if you are interested to join our video presentation.

The combination of a comprehensive manual, a training DVD, and coloring and story book makes for a complete and ease-to-use package.September 8, 2006 at 1:46 am #4889Nancy WaltonParticipantHi Carmen,
There are thousands of supposed "therapies" for autism. For me, a therapy is something that improves a condition. Nothing can be claimed to be a therapy, unless there is peer reviewed, control group – treatment group research that shows it's effectiveness in improving a condition. Just because there is an article on a "therapy" does not mean that the therapy is effective. Also, be wary of personal stories or testimonials.
I'm sure that swimming with dolphins is fun. So is skiing, art, swimming, and horse back riding. It is important for autistics to have fun, as it is important for everyone to have fun. But there is a difference between having fun and recieving therapy to alleviate a condition (although my son's therapist mix the two quite a bit).
At the moment, the only therapy that improves IQ, speech, social interactions and behavior, for autisitc children is ABA. I can send you articles on research that support ABA. If anyone on this chat board comes across peer reviewed articles on research done with some other therapy, please bring it to our attention.
