1. Melatonin is not banned in Canada to the best of my knowledge. It is available over the counter at my local LondonDrugs and Pharmasave. There are cautions associated with its use. read the label, talk the Pharmacist and consult your pediatric Dr.
2. Respite… there are some options which are dependent on your location. For example here in Vic our VSCA can offer some limited supoprt and, after a four year wait you can access Community Options respite services. It is possible that the @Home program may also assist… your "Facilitator" (aka Social Worker) should be able to assist with application otherwise you can find the @ Home app here: http://www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/at_home/pdf/cf2158int_jul06.pdf (the @ home program also has "medical services" which I am told some use to access OT and SLP supports). Beyond these resources there may be local options so check in with your social worker (Facilitator). In some instances I know of people who have accessed repite supports when stressors reached a point that family breakdown was likely (and the child's safety was a concern). Chat with your SW (facilitator) about how to access supports like this if your family is in this situation.
June 28, 2007 at 7:42 pm #5199Adrienne MullerMemberHi featers!
Haven't had too many questions lately. Our ABA program is up and running..just building hours and our funding is in place. Now that we are here, I started remembering talking with various parents earlier on about things like respite, etc. Some suggestions were out there, but we were too overwhelmed at the time. Now I am wondering if there is any advice as to how to get the most out of government services, etc??
Also, my son has had a lot of sleep difficulties recently. I read about Melatonin for use with autistic kids in the U.S. (apparently it has been banned in Canada). Does anyone have any knowledge or experience about this??
Thanks again,

Hello all,
Summer is coming and I have registered my child to some recreational programs at the community. Long ago, somebody told me that they were able to apply some funding to cover the cost to pay the one on one worker . I am wondering if you know any of the agencies/ charities that provide funding for that and how I could apply some to help my child? He's 7 now and the funding the government gives is NOTHING compares to what we are doing with a team of 5 therapists, a consultant and I only work part time. If you know of anywhere I could ask for help, please let me know. Thank you very much in advance.Trinh

After sending to my sister whose little one is a Thomas Freak! She informed me that any recalled Thomas items can be taken back to any Thomas retailer (such as Wal-mart, Toys R Us, Toy Jungle) – if you no longer have a receipt, you will get the last sale price for them, and if the items were bought in a set, the items must be returned in a set.
Hope this helps!
June 15, 2007 at 7:11 pm #5203Andrea FinchParticipant** IMPORTANT – recall on certain Thomas the Train products due to potential lead content in the paint **
Hi all – I thought I'd draw this story to your attention as I believe that Thomas the Train items are often popular in ABA families.
If you have Thomas the Tank engine trains and products, you will probably want to check out the link below, or simply Google "Thomas recall" to find out which products are being recalled due to the risk of lead content.
I have no reason to think this is a hoax as some of the major news outlets are reporting the story. I have also tried one of the 1-800 numbers and got a message concerning the recall.
It looks like only certain items are subject to the recall and these are items purchased within a specific time period.
If you have items on the recall list, the bulletin states they should be taken away immediately. There are instructions on how to apply to the company for replacements.
No need to contact me for further information, as I don't have any – but do feel free to follow the suggested links.
As if we weren't busy enough already…
