Smart that you are not going through FHAN. Not only do they take long but often if the child is not easy to diagnose then it will be a very difficult and long process.
I went through FHAN and two private assessments myself. I did not pay! If you want to know more or anyone else on the board, email me privately and I will share my true story of my son's assessment process.

** BTW, Ron Schmidt is a wonderful psychologist and I think he will do a great job should you persue Able's services. Do you plan on doing therapy?Don't wait to get diagnosis in to line up. Get on waiting list for behavioral consultants and interventionist first. That's is what I learned because most wait list are 3-18 months long depending on what is available and how good they are. By the time you get a diagnosis and if he is on the spectrum you are ready to go the next step.
However if he is not on the spectrum and does not have autism then you can always call to cancel the spot. Does that make sense?
Anyways looking forward to your email so I can share my private assessments. My diagnosis started in May 2005 and took me till July 2007 so some of the info may help you avoid the things I was not made aware of.
Take care.

I just did everything privately and actually just got approved for my funds yesterday. I got the pediatrician, speach path and physcologist evaluations all done privately. The only one that cost a bit of money was the physcologist. I went to an excellent man from the Able Clinic, Ron Schmit. His had a 2 month wait list ( minimal compared to the FHAN wait list) It wasn't to outragiously priced either. I can explain all about it if you want to email me. I will give you my number if you email me privately. moonie@telus.net
Talk to you soon =)
January 29, 2008 at 7:48 am #5527Amber ArmstrongParticipantThanks, I will give ASBC a call. I have decided not to go through FHAN because the wait is too long. I am going through the ABLE clinics for the psychologist and speech pathologist portion and using our pediatrician.

Have you called ASBC (Autism Society of BC)? They may be able to help you out? 604-434-0880. They have meetings every month I believe but feel free to call them and they may have info on support groups in your neighborhood.
Personally I have gone through FHAN's diagnosis and if you want to know more about it please email me at yipee@shaw.ca and I will be happy to give you my experience and tips that may help you out.
I am sort of in a similiar boat. My older ASD boy has a diagnosis and my younger son has been viewed as either gifted or ADHD. I am also persuing diagnosis with him. Interesting because I know that when as a mother you know and you have to convince someone that they need to assess him …it is not easy. Especially for me in the second round. I met someone on this chat board that told me her preschooler is verbally advanced and was diagnosed on the spectrum. That is why most ASD parents think I am over anxious. But I know that the assessment will truly help you focus on what he needs. So anyways, drop me a line and I can share with you some of the "pitfalls" and bewares you should know when going through the diagnosis process with FHAN.
Thx.
Mr. M's mamaJanuary 29, 2008 at 6:57 am #5529Amber ArmstrongParticipantHello,
Just wanted to introduce myself to the board. My name is Amber, I have 2 boys Devin (4, NT) and Nicholas (2, I think ASD). We are going through the private diagnosis process right now. Has anyone else done this? I just can't bear to wait the 8 months for FHAN especially since I have felt hes ASD for several months already and finally people are listening.
Also anyone know of any support groups I can go to? I haven't been handling this very well and would love to talk with people who have been through it.
thanks in advance
January 29, 2008 at 6:31 am #5530Jenny ObandoMemberRe preschool support,
One way to get around it is to find a preschool that DOES NOT have a support person on staff, because that means they would have to hire someone to be with your child.
This is when you come in , in your white horse and save them because you can solve that problem for them, since you already have someone who knows your son and is totally trained.
The preschool of course would have to interview them and approve of them and then, apply for supported child care funding on behalf of your child, and they hire and pay her directly.
If the funding is not approved because of waiting list, then you would have to pay your childs helper directly.
That is how we did it and it worked great, many moons ago, however I do not think it has changed that much.
I hope this info helps
