We are looking for an ABA tutor to work with our 2 year old son, who has just been diagnosed with Autism. We are in the process of setting up a brand new home-based program under the supervision of our Behaviour Consultant Sharon Baxter & Junior Consultant, Tyla Frewing.
We require the Candidate to be 19 years of age with a clear criminal record check. Experience implementing Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) curricula would be fantastic, but is not essential as all training will be provided.
What is important is a desire to work with and improve the lives of special needs children. This position would suit people with an interest in Behavioural Psychology, special education, or speech/language pathology.
We have 2, 2 hour shifts available during the morning between 9am-11am. Plus a monthly team meeting which does not have a set date or time yet!
We live in the South Surrey Area, close to Morgan Creek.

February 15, 2009 at 6:45 pm #10538Debra AntifaevMemberI would like to add to Jean's post regarding ABA tutor requirements…
Always, always, ALWAYS ask for a criminal record check. Not only is this a great record for you to keep it is also a requirement from MCFD.
Most of you have probably never been through a Ministry "audit"…..it is not pleasant.
We were asked to provide Criminal Record checks, Social Insurance Numbers and Resumes for each of our tutors. They can disallow any funding that you have paid to someone who has not provided the correct documentation. The other edge of this sword is the fact that I have hired tutors, asked for a copy of their CRC, etc and they have told me; "Noone else has ever asked me…." This results in another gut-wrenching decision…do I fire this person…keep waiting, asking and hoping….??
Parents who do not follow the MCFD mandated requirements do a huge disservice to those of us who do.
Get the records folks. It will save you time and money in the long run.
….and pray you never need to drag them all out!!February 15, 2009 at 2:20 am #10539Mike & JeanParticipantThe previous post reminded me to share the following:
Parents: Make sure you are CHECKING all the references of potential therapists you are recruiting for your teams, particularly the ones who claim to have previous ABA experience. Get the names of the families and CALL them. Besides asking about their work, ask about work habits, such as attitude, being a team player, did they follow instruction, punctuality, were they discreet and confidential. What about ethics? Did they have any – or as an example, did they "lever" you for more money? Would they re-hire or recommend this person? Bottom line: Don't let your desire to have a full ABA team misguide or cloud your judgement when hiring anyone to work with your child.
We've been running an ABA team for over 12 years and the vast majority of people who have worked with our son, including his present team, have been absolutely fantastic! But, over the last 12 years, every so often when we haven't done "due diligence" we have occasionally gotten "stung"….and it is extemely expensive to the pocketbook, but more importantly to your child. So, please be careful.
February 14, 2009 at 3:24 am #10540Kimberley YoshiharaMemberFYI – please be aware that there is a woman using the FEAT boards to solicit business for herself. I won't use her name publicly, but if you would like it you can contact me. When she called me she said she saw my posting on the FEAT boards looking for a therapist – I was a little concerned since it had been at least 3 or 4 years since I had advertised here for a therapist. When I questioned her further about her experience she admitted she wasn't looking for a job for herself, but that she trains "Lead" therapists and finds positions for them. Apparently, she charges a fee (under $100) to train people in the principles of ABA. She then uses the FEAT boards to call families looking for placements – she told me she trains Leads – however, these people are brand new to ABA.
Then she will offer them to families for a finderâs fee she charges to the family.
She also will ask families what hours and rate of pay they will provide as this enables her to know how much $$$ to expect below. Then she requires the therapist to hand over their first months earnings with each family she finds them or they pay her 1/3 of their monthly earnings over a three month period.
Be aware.
