March 21, 2009 at 1:49 am #10514Mike & JeanParticipantThe following article was published in today's North Shore News. If I lived in North Vancouver, I would be extremely concerned! "Clustering" is simply another name for SEGREGATION. I would also suggest that if the North Vancouver School District is successful in this venture…others are sure to follow….and soon.

NVSD approves autism learning centre
Benjamin Alldritt, North Shore News
Published: Friday, March 20, 2009
North Vancouver school district is looking to improve its teaching of those with autism.Trustees instructed staff March 10 to develop a "learning centre for students with autism and related disorders," essentially a room dedicated to the needs of the district's 133 autistic children.
The wording of the motion was left deliberately vague to allow staff a great deal of flexibility in implementing the idea. The plan builds on the concept of clustering, where students with comparable needs are concentrated at a particular school. However, staff told trustees that there are a wide range of needs within the term "autism."
While no schools are named in the motion, the staff report did suggest that two schools, Norgate and Seymour Heights, would provide the best coverage of the district.

March 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #10515Elaine RaynaultKeymasterI am pleased to post this for Alexis. She has worked for my family for 2 years. During that time, I have been impressed with her work ethic, her communication skills and her ability to handle feedback. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like a further reference. I_am_elaine@shaw.ca
My name is Alexis and I am looking for an ABA therapist position to fill my mornings and early afternoons from Monday to Friday in the White Rock/South Surrey area.
Currently I am working on a Sharon Baxter team and enjoy it immensely. I have worked as a nanny for a family of 3 boys with autism for over 2 years and have worked in close proximity to their ongoing ABA programs.
I am capable of handling a large volume of work efficiently and am a good team player, willing to assist with tasks and work to make sure all objectives are met. I feel I can maintain motivation in the face of setbacks and disappointments and also feel that communication is key.
I plan on taking the ABA Support Worker program at Surrey College in September with the eventual goal of becoming an ABA Support Worker in the Surrey school district.
I would love to hear from you. My phone # is 604-617-9019 or if you would rather email me at true_lexus@hotmail.com
March 19, 2009 at 9:09 pm #10516Todd DeaParticipant*ABA THERAPIST(S) NEEDED IN NORTH VANCOUVER**
Our family is eagerly looking for therapists (tutors), both senior and junior, to join our home based ABA program that we have running for our very charming and playful, high functioning 4 year old son.
Previous experience working with children with Autism would be fantastic, but is not essential. Individuals interested in psychology, education, speech pathology or any other career involving children are welcome.
We are guided on this journey by our Consultant, the very capable and passionate, Kathryn Theroux from the Able Clinic.
This is a great opportunity to receive training and hands on experience in ABA therapy with minimal initial qualifications. What you should have is lots of energy and patience, strong play skills, a positive attitude and good multi-tasking abilities. Enthusiam, dedication, reliability, an open mind and a willingness to learn are most desirable.
As a therapist you need to be able to commit to: two or three, 3 hour shifts each week, in addition to attending bi-weekly team meetings.
Salary is negotiable and is based on experience; only apply if you are a natural at relating to children. We will ask that you make a one-year commitment to the team and as a matter of course, we will require a criminal record check.
We are located 5 minutes from the Second Narrows bridge, on a bus route, in the Windsor Park area of North Vancouver.
Please e-mail resumes or any inquiries to onedea@shaw.ca.
Telephone inquiries are also welcome at 604-765-0342.Previous applicants are encouraged and welcome to apply

Long Term Goal Planning: What Is It and Why Bother?
by
Sara White, PhD, BCBA
at
7:00pm, March 17
in the
Delbrook Recreation CentreWe are very excited to have Dr. Sara White as our guest speaker. Sara, a BCBA with a PhD in Clinical Psychology specializing in ABA, is one of the most brilliant behaviour consultants in the world.
Long term goal planning is an extremely beneficial clinical tool for behavioral and educational program planning for individuals with autism. In addition to allowing parents and educators to understand the relationship between current programs and more complex long-term goals, it also can assist practitioners in prioritizing targets for intervention. While similar to an individualized educational plan, long-term goal plans should ideally consider goals that are achievable over the next five to ten years. Ideally, these goal plans would be revisited with the individuals instructional team at least once per year.
This presentation will be geared towards practitioners and parents and will be a discussion of a clinical tool rather than a description of original research. While there will be a brief discussion of theoretical research related to the topic, the presentation will largely focus on the clinical application of this technique.
Learning objectives for the presentation will be as follows:
– To describe the purpose and benefits of long term goal planning;
– To describe the relationship between long term and short term goals;
– To describe one format for presenting long term goals to instructional teams;
– To analyze one example long term goal and develop example short term goals based on that long term goal.Please note that Sara has presented the same topic at the BC Association for Behavior Analysis conference on March 7.
