    Can anyone recommend a good speech/language development scale being used by their SLP to plan and measure progress? After getting the autism diagnosis, I asked my son's SLP to show me the curriculum she used so I could integrate it into the intervention program. She spent two hours giving me the "I'm the professional you're not" attitude, and charged me $200 for the discussion. I am extremely unhappy for having to tolerate her arrogance, but she knows she can get away with anything because SLPs are so much in demand. In other words, I am desperate and she's not. Since I know I will never get her to do it, I will now do the work of planning and tracking progress, and hope she will cooperate. What I'm looking for is a list of milestones, each with a list of criteria. Thank you very much.

    To Natalie for the OT in Richmond;

    Patty Wu has a private practice of OT in Richmond. Her number is 604-313-0562, or pattyots@telus.net

    You still need to check references, as I've never used her – it's too far for us; we are not from Richmond.

    For the piano teacher, I could ask another family in Richmond. Email me at snkidsinfo@yahoo.ca if you are interested.

    In reply to Tony who was looking for info on karate etc. A couple of months ago we enrolled our 6 year old son in Tae Kwon Do at a local school and he is really enjoying it. He goes twice a week and in the short time that he has been going, his focus is already a lot better, he can balance on one foot (which he was never able to before)follow directions better, is showing respect as well as improving every class! We contacted a school in the White Rock area who had some experience with special needs kids who said they would send us some information and we are still waiting. The school our son is attending did not have any experience with autism, however, one of our therapists went in with him the first few times and trained the instructor who was very willing to work with our son. At this time he is getting private lessons but we are hoping to integrate him into the regular class shortly. If you would like more information, please give us a call. We can also give you a pass which would entitle your child to experience their services for one month for free .

    Hi Tony,

    Our son was in Tae Kwon Do two years ago. We thought it would be a good class/activity as an instructor stands at the front of the class and the kids imitate. There are components that require following verbal directions but if a child can imitate in a naturalized environment they can do well.

    However, the class that we put our son in did not work out as well as we had hoped for several reasons: the room was in a large warehouse type building. The other classroom was partially open to ours and because of the size, sounds echoed. IN addition, the parents were able to sit in the "classroom/warehouse" and the parents were not quiet, talking amongst themselves. All of this combined equaled a very loud, distracting environment that made it difficult for our son to pay attention to the directions. One of the insturctors was fabulous about putting our son up front, close to the teacher and she was really good about following through (we didn't train her, she was just a natural behaviorist!) Unfortunately she was the co-owner and wasn't our regular instructor. THe regular instructo was pretty good and tried hard to keep our son's attention but he was young.

    I think that in a different venue, it would have been a good activity. Our son was not super into it after a few months so we did not continue and have switched to other activities.

    Hope that gives you some ideas of what scenarios you might want to avoid!

    I just read this article:

    http://www.thejournalnews.com/mindbody/august03/karate.html

    Does anyone know of an autism-friendly karate class in BC?

    Has anyone tried putting their kid into a karate class around here?

    This fall we're looking to add speech therapy to our son's ABA program. He's four. Does anyone know of a good speech therapist that is in the Chilliwack area or willing to commute out this way…who has worked with autistic children and with an ABA team?

    Thanks.
