Long Term Goal Planning: What Is It and Why Bother?
by
Sara White, PhD, BCBA
GUEST SPEAKER:
We are very excited to have Dr. Sara White as our guest speaker. Sara, a BCBA with a PhD in Clinical Psychology specializing in ABA, is one of the most brilliant behaviour consultants in the world.
TOPIC:
Long term goal planning is an extremely beneficial clinical tool for behavioral and educational program planning for individuals with autism. In addition to allowing parents and educators to understand the relationship between current programs and more complex long-term goals, it also can assist practitioners in prioritizing targets for intervention. While similar to an individualized educational plan, long-term goal plans should ideally consider goals that are achievable over the next five to ten years. Ideally, these goal plans would be revisited with the individuals instructional team at least once per year.This presentation will be geared towards practitioners and parents and will be a discussion of a clinical tool rather than a description of original research. While there will be a brief discussion of theoretical research related to the topic, the presentation will largely focus on the clinical application of this technique.
Learning objectives for the presentation will be as follows:
– To describe the purpose and benefits of long term goal planning;
– To describe the relationship between long term and short term goals;
– To describe one format for presenting long term goals to instructional teams;
– To analyze one example long term goal and develop example short term goals based on that long term goal.Date: Monday, March 5, 2012
Time: 7-9pm
Location: Tyee room at Steveston Community Centre – 4111 Moncton Street, Richmond
Coffee/Tea and snacks provided. Donations are greatly appreciated.Please RSVP to Paul (richmond.asbc@gmail.com), so we can prepare for handouts.

In my journey of being a parent of an autistic kid, I met and learned from many amazing parents over the years.
Many of them did so much for their kid(s)
* gave up many things (such as career, vacation, car, house, etc)
* took on multiple jobs
* faced family crisis
* learned to be a consultant/BI/EA for their own kid(s)
* worked with the various teams (home, school and community)Some of them move into this field (as BI, EA, SEA, consultant, OT, SLP, etc) and become the blessings of other families.
And here are some parents who work so hard not necessary for their own kid(s), but all the kids on the spectrum. They have done so much without asking return, because it is just the right thing to do.
Please come to the meeting to learn and show your supports.
Cheers.

Medicares Orphans – film (42 mins) followed by discussion and Q&A
Topic:
Medicares Orphans
We have a Medicare system in our country that purports to be universal, yet it excludes from coverage the only effective science-based treatment: ABA IBI from children with autism.
The minimal funding which exists today in BC ($22,000 under 6 and $6,000 from 6 to 18) provided through the Ministry of Children and Families is completely discretionary, not secure or protected by legislation and could end tomorrow. This is simply wrong.
Take this great opportunity to join Jean Lewis and David Marley, long-time treatment advocates, film producers and co-founders of Medicare for Autism Now! discuss:
* Why they made this film
* Why did they make it now and most importantly
* How can you secure and protect your childs treatment funding now and in the future?For information about Medicare for Autism Now! http://www.medicareforautismnow.org

(co-facilitators for ASBC Richmond Group)Peter WongMemberHi all,
I have a FREE desktop computer.
It is Gateway 507GR and here is the spec:
http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/gateway-507gr-p4-530/4507-3118_7-31353898.html?tag=mncol;subnavNot much use for about one year. My boy has used it for many years for games, Internet browsing, Flash games (such as typing practice), etc.
This machine is old, but it is running Windows XP (so reasonable fast). Because it is running on XP, many games (CD-ROMs) borrowed from the library can be used on this computer.
The package includes the desktop, Creative speakers, a keyboard and a mouse.
If you need a monitor, I have a 19 Samsung LCD monitor for $25.
Please let me know, if you are interested. If it is not too far, I can even drop it off to your place. Otherwise, it will go to the recycle depot.
Cheers.
