We have been working on generating workshop topics in areas that are not typically addressed and / or in areas where we hear need. One of the areas that I have had multiple requests around is a workshop on the topic of Autism and male sexual health (sexual health across the life span).

I have had the opportunity to do some smaller workshops for specific groups, but with the general response and interest I thought I would survey FEAT members to see if a larger workshop on male sexual health is indeed an area of interest. To chime in with your two cents please fill out the following survey.

    Anxiety & Children
Bringing Science and Behavior Analysis into the Treatment of Anxiety

Watching a child suffer is excruciating: seeing them suffer when nothing seems to be wrong is even worse. We feel helpless. Anxiety is messy and unpredictable. And it has the audacity to show up in all sorts of places. It brings our children’s lives to a halt (and ours too). They get stuck. They stop eating, speaking or socializing. They won’t go to school. Filled with fear and panic they look to us in desperation. We fight to support them; to make things better. We are crushed by our ineffectiveness in supporting them. Don’t get me wrong, we bend over backwards trying to fix it, but nothing seems to work. After trying everything we feel like our hands are tied. Anxiety is a monster that consumes lives. 33% of adults. 25% of teens. 15% of children. It’s even worse if you have a disability. Lives consumed. Disordered levels of anxiety create incredible motivation to behave. That behavior takes on many forms and is often misunderstood as inappropriate and deliberate. Our children get stuck in patterns of behavior trying to get their needs met while suffering from horrible feelings inside. Its time to change our view of anxiety; its time to see anxiety for what it is; its time to bring science into the treatment of anxiety; its time to change lives.

I have spent the last 4 years studying and learning about anxiety and disability. I am in no way an expert, but intend to engage the topic from the science of behavior analysis, share my experience, and discuss treatment. I have written these presentations to shift our understanding of anxiety and its treatment. I have written these presentations to break the silence and begin to support kids and adults alike, who are suffering silently and painfully. They are not perfect, not even close. However what is being presented is the culmination of 4 years of experience and effective treatment built off of 15 years of study in Behavior Analysis. This area of treatment is evolving and there have been some significant shifts in what science shows as effective ways to deal with anxiety.

This 8-hour workshop engages the topic of anxiety in children while standing on the roots of behavior analysis and science.

    Session 1
We will start by changing our understanding of what anxiety is. We will walk through the process of how something normal becomes disorder and shuts down lives. We will examine the physiological, mental, and behavioral components.
    – Recognizing anxiety & the science behind it (how did we get here?)
    – Brain & body connection (components of anxiety)
    Session 2
We will examine components of understanding the function of behavior (why do kids with anxiety act the way they do?). We will look at initial steps in effective behavior change (principles of behavior change)
    – Behavior (Functional Analysis of Anxiety)
    – Principles of behavior change (science of behavior)
With a cohesive understanding of what anxiety looks like and an understanding of behavior we will examine effective supports for change. What can we do? How do we take initial steps in changing anxiety?
    – Initial steps in treatment
    – Dealing with the physiological components of anxiety
    – Mapping anxiety (knowing where they are? Understanding levels / escalation in anxiety)
    – Replacing the broken tools (replacing anxious behaviors with ones that work)

    Session 3
Session 3 will look at building supports to get kids back into their lives. How do we go from panic on the slide or swings to playful laughter? How do we deal with the mind? Kids with anxiety have illogical fears. How do we support that change?
    – Dealing with the brain (Perception versus reality)
    – Safe Exposure (replacing fear based memories); Getting Used to It
    – Dealing with the Urge (motivation to behave)

    Session 4
In session 4 we look at allowing our emotion to became an ally. How do we teach our children to experience anxiety without allowing it to become a monster that consumes them? How do we hold our own suffering while moving towards what is most important in our lives?
    – Looking at basic concepts in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
    – Changing perspective on anxiety and its value in our lives
    – modeling emotional regulation
It is hard to represent what is encompassed in this workshop using text and bullet points. I embarked on this journey to create support for my students. I wanted to know how I could help. I wanted to know how I could enable them to become kids again. I wanted to see them laugh, smile and enjoy life. In the process of researching and learning how to support them, I have stumbled onto processes that have forever changed me and many of my students. Lives have changed. Kids are being kids again. In gratitude to this journey, motivated by their suffering and my own, I am giving a voice to that process with the goal of seeing lives changed.

This workshop is open to everyone. These concepts are widely applicable to young, old, disabled, autism, vocal and non-vocal and everyone in between.

    Autism and Anxiety:
Bringing science and behavior analysis into the treatment of anxiety

This two-part 6-hour workshop engages the topic of anxiety and autism while standing on the roots of behavior analysis. Estimates indicate that 20 to 80% of individuals with Autism suffer from disordered levels of Anxiety. Disordered levels of anxiety create incredible motivation to behave. That behavior takes on many forms and is often misunderstood as inappropriate and deliberate. Our students get stuck in patterns of behavior trying to get their needs met while suffering from horrible feelings inside. This area of treatment is evolving and there have been some significant shifts in what science shows as effective ways to deal with anxiety.

    Workshop 1 will cover
    1. Recognizing anxiety
    2. Brain & body connection (components of anxiety)
    3. Behavior (Functional Analysis of Anxiety)
    4. Initial steps in treatment
    a. Dealing with the body
    b. Mapping anxiety
    c. Using Cues (behaviors) to support initial changes in anxiety
Workshop 2 will build off of workshop one and cover areas
    1. Dealing with the brain (Perception versus reality)
    2. Safe Exposure (replacing fear based memories); Getting Used to It
    3. Dealing with the Urge (motivation to behave)
    4. Changing perspective on anxiety and its value in our lives
    5. Replacing the broken tools (inappropriate behaviors with ones that work)

It is hard to represent what is encompassed by these workshops in text and bullet points. I have, however, seen the effect that these concepts can and have had. Change has come not only in my own life, but also in the lives of those around me. However, foremost I have seen the impact spread to where it is desperately needed: the students we care about.

This workshop series is open to everyone. These concepts are widely applicable to young, old, disabled, vocal and non-vocal and everyone in between. There is limited seating (25 to 30) at our anticipated venue and you must RSVP to attend (However, if there is a greater response we will change the venue to accommodate).
