    Hi:

I was wondering if I could get some thoughts on anyone who has hired a male therapist to work with their child. Our son is 11 years old now -nonverbal. Just wondering if your child responded well (we have only ever had female therapists only because that's all that has ever applied). I would also like the perspective of other therapists who have had the opportunity to work with a male therapist. Was it good for the team – was there still a team dynamic achieved, etc. Pls email me at
    westernad@hotmail.com subject – male therapist

I thank you in advance for any insight/info from your experiences that you could share.

Hi again: Just a reminder as the month is coming to an end. I hope in light of the fact that we as parents want/demand a better training system than the one being offered/forced by MCFD that we get a really great turnout for a workshop/speaker of this calibur. I encourage you to encourage all involved in your child's treatment to attend this workshop. People like Gina Green rank right up there with the very best in the ABA field – in the science of this field. It is a not to be missed workshop. Also if we do not attend these workshops and hence support those bringing these kind of quality workshops to us – they will be a thing of the past. We have to start showing up for these – this includes new parents new therapists not just the veteran parents/therapists – I understand money and time are in short supply but workshops like these are well worth the effort – knowledge is power – not only for you but for your child -for their future. I hope to see you there. This price is a great deal but only to the end of the month and only for the first 50 – so hurry.

For those already aware of this offer, sorry for the redundancy. For those who have not yet received the offer, please read the following:

Hello Parents – Some of you may know that Arbutus Coast Presentations will be bringing Dr. Gina Green to Vancouver on June 16. Gina’s presentation setup will be quite interesting; she will be speaking on 4 topics and then fielding questions and commentary from the registrants (details are on our website http://www.arbutuscoast.com). It will be a great opportunity for parents and professionals alike to directly interact with one of the most respected scientists in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

We are especially interested in making sure that parents have a reasonable chance to see Gina in Vancouver; and we are also interested in ensuring that we will have enough registrants to warrant covering our costs associated with having her presentation here – so, toward that end, we would like to offer the following exclusive price to parents and their therapists:

    · For the first 50 parents and their therapists registering by the end of February the fee is $100 per person ($75 less than the regular registration cost).

    · For the next 25 parents and their therapists registering by the end of March the fee is $135 per person ($40 less than the regular registration cost).

    · The usual 10% reduction in registration fee for previous attendees at an Arbutus Coast Presentation does not apply for this offer.

This offer is not going to be publicized on the brochure or the website, and it is solely dependent on an honour system of registration. We do ask that the therapists (one-to-one behaviour interventionist/therapists) are, indeed working with a child diagnosed ASD, and obviously, that the parents have a child diagnosed with ASD. We know that many parents are dependent upon extended family members for care, and as such we will also recognize grandparents and other immediate family members for the reduced rate.

We are committed to bringing the best scientists to British Columbia for the sole purpose of sharing knowledge; we hope that you will support us in this endeavour.

    Yours truly,

    Larry Uhlin & Nancy Pike

    Hi Everyone:

Just a reminder about this must see workshop with a world class presenter! Early bird registration is coming to a close! I encourage everyone to get out and see this workshop. We really need to make an effort to get to these true ABA workshops with some of the top people in the field – if we don't then unfortunately they will cease which would really be a great loss for our kids – our therapists. This is a must see workshop for both parents and therapists! See you there.

Hi: This is off topic but my cousin has just been diagnosed with Aspergers (she is 15 turning 16). She has always had outbursts and behavioral issues and extreme interests in certain things but I think it was chalked up to being spoiled/rude, etc. (I am not near her so have not seen in her since she was very little as my uncle and her mom divorced many years ago).

Does anyone know what the protocol would be at this age?

Thanks for any info. You may email me privately at westernad@hotmail.com

    Hi again:

I was asked to write this awhile ago and thought I would share it with you. I think people that do 'get' it need to realize that this could happen to them – to their children or their grandchildren.

    IMAGINE

If I may take a moment of your time to give you a glimpse into the lives of a family with a child with autism in Canada.

Imagine if you will – a young boy of 3 – as he is screaming, raging and banging his fists on his head – able to talk but not knowing how – and in the midst of one of these outbursts, your eyes connect with his . . . and at that moment you see that his eyes, full of tears, are screaming, pleading, begging . . . for you to help him, to understand him . . . a cry for help so strong, you can almost hear the words.

This child is on a wait-list for autism treatment – his parents are told it may be a year or more – and then he will not get the medically required 40 hours a week but only 10.

Imagine if you will – a young girl – she turned 6-years-old 5 months ago. She had been in an ABA program for 2 years and had made remarkable progress. Her doctors and Consultants warned against reducing treatment as she would most likely regress at this age. Her parents could not afford to continue to pay for her treatment privately – they had exhausted all of their funds. The young girl has started to regress – 2 years ago she used to sit and pull her hair out – this stopped during treatment. Can you see her sitting in her room – she is just off to the side – and yes that is a bald spot on her head.

The Government cuts off ABA treatment for Autistic children at the age of 6

Imagine if you will – a 16-year-old boy – he is struggling at the door of his home as he and his suitcase are being removed. The social worker and 2 care-aides are taking him out. He doesn’t understand – he is wailing – he doesn’t know what he has done wrong. His parents had no choice – their son never received ABA treatment and has now entered puberty and has become violent with both of them and at school – they can no longer manage him at home- he has been expelled from every school – he must be sent to a group home in the United States – there are no adequate facilities here in Canada for him. Do you see his parents staring out the window after him – can you see the tears rolling down their faces – as their only child is being taken away.

Now imagine if you will . . . that this were your child or your grandchild.

Hello Everyone: I am posting this on behalf of Arbutus Coast. This will be an exciting workshop to see in the new year – especially at the early reduced rates.

    HI Cathy:

We give bonuses if times are good but there have been many years when they weren't.

A nice inexpensive gift that my therapists have always loved is a small picture of them with our son in a frame or you can do those little hanging Christmas ornament picture frames and just put a cute picture of your child in it – they aren't too expensive. I also write a note to them from the heart – to thank them for all their work, dedication and how much they have done for our son and how important the work that they do is and that we really appreciate the effort each and everyday of the year.

    Hi Guys:

I was wondering if anyone had a good disclaimer for new therapists – about how they are being trained in ABA techniques but that that does not mean they are able to go out and do this on 'their own'-that they can indeed work for another family with a consultant but that they are not equipped nor is it ethical for them to set up a program for another child. I had one that I had done years ago but can't find it anymore.

Thanks in advance. You can post me privately or to the list. my email is joe_rodrigues@telus.net

    Hi Guys:

I just wanted to offer a little piece of information that was passed on to me by a friend who works in an insurance company.

I have a therapist/interventionist whom I just took down to a workshop in Vancouver. In doing so – I end up paying for the girls rooms, their food, travel, etc and the cost of the workshop.

When we arrived home on her following shift – the girl informed that she will be quitting and moving away. She told me she had planned on doing this for about 2 months prior.

I and my child were basically used so that she could add another workshop to her resume. My child will not benefit in anyway from the training that I just provided her. Yet I have no recourse to get that money back.

My friend who works at the insurance company says that before they are taken to any training that is expensive – they have to sign a contract saying that they won't leave for 12 months or they will have to pay for the costs of the workshop themselves.

It is something I will do in the future as I had NO idea this girl was leaving – none. The girl has been with us for almost 3 years.

Just thought I would pass along the info for anyone else so no other family/child has to lose money like this.

    Barbara
