I'm interested in doing voluntary work with autistic children and have experience from the UK but don't know how things work over here. Can anyone help / advise please?
I have recently arrived in Canada from the UK where I worked for about 10 years, initially as a volunteer and then as a paid Teaching Assistant at a school for autistic children. I am also the parent of a young man with autism so have over 20 years experience of autism and the associated behaviours.
I have a work permit but am more interested in voluntary work with autistic children. I have been trained in TEACCH and PECS and positive handling strategies (Team Teach). In addition, I have done support work on a one to one basis for a couple of families with autistic children.
I was obviously fully CRB checked for working with children in the UK and have references from the UK school where I worked but have not initiated any equivalent CRB checks in Canada as yet. I live in the West End of Vancouver and don't have a car so would not want to travel too far.
I can be contacted by email on heather.ley@ntlworld.com
Thanks in advance for your help.
