ATTENTION ALL PARENTS!!!
Those of us involved in the struggle to secure publically funded treatment for children and those of us whose children are benefitting from that funding need to now acknowledge the two lawyers who committed the last seven years to this enormous task. It is important for all parents, especially those new to this struggle, to know that prior to the Auton decision there was NO treatment funding for science based treatment available in B.C. Today, because of Auton, every child under the age of six receives $20,000 per year for treatment and every child over six receives $6000.00 per year. That funding has given children, particularly the under 6 group a chance they never had before.
As a member of the Auton/Anderson legal steering committee as well as a petitioner in the Anderson case, I cannot adequately express my gratitude to Chris Hinkson and Birgitta vonKrosigk for their tireless work in advocating for all our children. Thankyou both for believing our children are worthy of justice.
I would encourage parents and others involved in this struggle to show their appreciation by sending a message of thanks to Chris and Birgitta at the following email addresses:
Chris Hinkson: ceh@hgelaw.com
Birgitta vonKrosigk: Bvonkrosigk@northshorelaw.comWe need to take time to thank those who help our children.

Mike & JeanParticipantATTENTION- PEOPLE OF ALL FAITHS:
Now is the time for people of all faiths to speakout in their communities of faith.
Speak to your priest, minister, rabbi, pastor, spiritual leader etc. about this perversion of justice.
Take copies of the petition to your congregations for signatures, advertise in your church bulletin, take 10 minutes during the service to speak about this to the people. Ask your spiritual leaders to take an "official and public stand" on this issue.
Many people don't "get autism" unless they are touched by it. I have personally found that asking the following question usually puts this issue into a perspective anyone, particularly anyone of faith can understand: "Will this judgement help those affected with autism, or will it harm them?" If our answer relies on the principles of any faith – the answer is clear – the moral obligation to right this terrible wrong.
I am not aware of any faith which endorses the notion of the strong and mighty turning their backs on or ignoring the suffering of the "weak".
This is a call to action for all Canadians.

In light of your recent coverage of the Supreme Court of Canada's Auton
vs. British Columbia (Attorney General) decision, please note that the
B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development will continue to
provide a range of services for children and youth who have been
diagnosed with autism, regardless of litigation.Autism is a spectrum disorder and affects each child differently. As
such, there is no one, universally accepted treatment. Research has
shown that Lovaas therapy has benefited some children, while applied
behavioural analysis helps others. The Ministry's funding programs offer families choice and flexibility to
assist them in choosing the therapies that best meet their child's
needs. Our province's budget for autism intervention has increased nearly
tenfold from $3.4 million in 1999/2000 to $30.8 million in 2004/2005.The B.C. Government is committed to continuing to provide funding and
services to children and youth with autism spectrum disorder. The
supreme court decision does not – and will not – alter that committment.Linda Reid

When F.E.A.T. of B.C. was formed in British Columbia in 1996 our mission was to: ensure that children with autism had access to publically funded medically necessary treatment. To enjoy the same right to health care as every other Canadian child.
Let me assure you all that today our mission remains the same. We parents have been left alone to right this wrong.
We will continue the work until our children have what they deserve.
Planning the next steps is in the works and will be communicated in the near future. Right now however, each and every reader of this board should download the petition available at the home page. Get 25 signatures and send or deliver it to your MP.
