    Richmond ASBC Parents Group Meeting

    The Richmond ASBC Parents Group proudly presents:

    ABA in the School Setting…What it Can Look Like

    This presentation will include a brief history of ABA in the Surrey School District, presented by Nancy Walton. There are now 60 well trained ABA Support Workers working in an ABA supported environment in the Surrey District. She will explain the process that the district and parents went through to achieve this working relationship as well as give the details of the criteria established for hiring practices in Surrey.

    Sharon Baxter, who has an MA in ABA and is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA), will present examples of the design and implementation of ABA programs in the classroom, including video examples. She will cover programming for academic literacy, communication, self-management (behaviour), social skills, and classroom management for students of varying ages and levels of independence.

    Location: Tyee room at Steveston Community Centre – 4111 Moncton Street, Richmond

    New ASBC Richmond Community Group

    We are pleased to announce that our new ASBC Richmond Community Group will start their bi-monthly meetings in the fall. We are thankful that parent volunteer Paul Wong stepped up to facilitate this group. Details of this new group are as follows:

    Where: Steveston Community Centre, Richmond
    When: Bi-monthly meetings on the last Monday of the month, at 7-9pm.
    Who: All of us in the autism community are welcome to attend, especially parents and families.
    What: There will be speakers for most meetings, sharing on topics related to autism. Parents can connect with each other for support and information.
    How: Paul Wong is the facilitator for the Richmond Group. There may be a co-facilitator (to be confirmed).

    Our first kick-off meeting:
    Date: October 4, 2010 (Monday)
    Time: 7-9pm
    Place: Steveston Community Centre, Richmond
    Topic: Back to School…
    Speakers: Nancy Walton, parent and teacher; Sharon Baxter, behavior consultant

    Posted on behalf of a family in Sunshine Coast:

    (1) Looking for a self-motivated individual with a formal background in applied behaviour analysis (ABA) to join a team on the Sunshine Coast (based in Robert’s Creek).* accessing Gibson’s and Sechelt. The appropriate candidate would have the opportunity to live in a small cottage adjacent to the family house. The job entails working with a young boy, age 12, diagnosed with autism in the home and community settings. Driver’s license is a must as well as a criminal background check and 3 references (2 from prior ABA placements). Non Crisis Intervention *CPI training is a plus, although training will be provided for the right candidate. Supervision will be supplied on an ongoing basis, which is a plus for someone who is interested in pursuing a career in human development. Looking for a commitment of at least one year.     (2) Looking for a creative and energetic applicant with a background in ABA, autism or related disabilities to provide home and community teaching to a young boy with autism on the Sunshine Coast. Supervision and training will be provided, must be able to attend workshops and meetings both in Robert’s Creek and Vancouver, Surrey area. This is a unique opportunity as you will be trained to support this young boy in various learning situations: part time and full time positions are available. Must have a valid driver’s license as well as a clean criminal record check. 2 references will be required.     GUEST SPEAKERS:
    1. Buffy is the Clinical Director of the Early Autism Project clinic in BC. She started in 1994 working for the Wisconsin Early Autism Project and began working as a Behavior Consultant in 1998. Buffy became a Clinical Director in 2003, and currently oversees the clinic in Tsawwassen.
    2. Kim is a Behavior Consultant of the Early Autism Project. She started in 2000 working for the Wisconsin Early Autism Project, became a Behavior Consultant in 2002, and began training other Behavior Consultants as a Clinical Supervisor in 2005. She has so far worked one-to-one with over 80 children with autism.

    TOPIC:
    Many children on the Autism Spectrum have difficulties when out in the community, but for those tricky appointments, things can be even more challenging. Strategies for preparing for these visits, some ideas for what you can do while you are at the appointment and ways to follow-up and practice in between visits will be topics of this presentation. The presenters will be showing some video clips of various teaching strategies and other strategies such as visuals and social stories will also be discussed and shown.

    We will have a toy sale event from 12noon to 1pm. We have added fun and educational toys and games to this event. Donations will proceed to the Autism Society.

    Coffee/tea/refreshments will be provided.
