Cathy FitzhughParticipant
FEATers,
I know everyone is busy with school and programs and the election, and life, but I have a question for fellow parents. My daughter is in school in Vancouver and somehow the school has decided that she will NOT be receiving full-time assistance. The school claims that they dont have enough SSW help. Our daughter is high functioning but her gross and fine motor skills are VERY behind, and there really is no way she can get through the year without help. Its crazy.
Have any of you fought this battle?
Won?
Lost?
Advice?Much Appreciated,
{Cathy}Cathy FitzhughParticipant**Lead therapist position available in Vancouver**

We need one more dedicated, encouraging, enthusiastic, responsible, and creative person to join our home-based ABA program.
We live in central Vancouver near Main and Broadway.
Our six year old daughter is low on the spectrum, has been receiving ABA therapy for four years, and is *very* verbal, affectionate, and fun. Her programs are fascinating, and her progress is swift.
We work with the Early Autism Project and our consultant is Kim Kirsch.
Beyond running programs in the apartment, you will be helping her learn to socialize with other children through facilitated play dates, take community outings, play games, make art, and go to the playground. There is a lot of laughter involved in her sessions!
**If you have experience with running play dates, please contact us, we are losing a member of the team who is very skilled in this department and need an equally excellent replacement.**
Previous experience with autistic children would be an asset.
But, we will also be interested in individuals with a psychology or special education background. Initial training will be provided by our senior therapist along with follow up sessions.These positions will appeal to people with an interest in psychology, education, special education, speech/language pathology or any other career involving children and clinical therapy.
This is not only a very good opportunity to gain training and job experience with minimal qualifications but also a fabulously rewarding experience.
All applicants should have strong play skills, have a positive attitude, be good multi-taskers, be able to take constructive feedback and implement it immediately, and should have lots of energy and patience. Our team rocks! And we really appreciate what YOU do.
As a therapist, you need to be able to commit to: two 3-hour-shifts a week, plus attend biweekly team progress meetings on Thursdays from 5:00-6:30.
You also must be able to commit to the team for at least one year. Salary is negotiable and is based on experience.
And as par, a current criminal record check will be required.Please e-mail resumes to scissorhappy@shaw.ca
Thanks Very Much,{Cathy}

Cathy FitzhughParticipantA new and interesting Autism article in New York magazine:
http://nymag.com/news/features/47225/{Cathy}
Cathy FitzhughParticipantParents,
Have any of you ever bought any material (or personalized books)
from the "Sandbox Learning Company?" I'm often tempted, but have never taken the step.I also wanted to take the time to mention how utterly inspiring the Carol Gray workshop was last weekend. If any of you ever get the opportunity to hear her speak, please do so. She's entertaining and so very wise. There are some new guidelines for writing Social Stories TM that are very intuitive and inventive. I wish all of you had this information.
Thanks.
Happy June everyone!{Cathy}
Cathy FitzhughParticipant{Happy June Everyone}
We need an awesome swimming teacher for private lessons this summer. Do any of you know of someone in Vancouver? Our daughter, who is six, has a lot of troubles with gross motor, so we are looking for a person who is wise enough to use her time to get those muscles moving, as well as teaching her the very basics of waterness (kicking, blowing bubbles, floating, etc..)
If anyone knows of someone, or you ARE that someone,
please send an e-mail to: scissorhappy@shaw.ca
along with a resume. Thank You SO Much!{Cathy}
Cathy FitzhughParticipantHi FEATers,
I just feel like it's time to post about Stephan Marinoiu.
( The father of a boy who has Autism who is on a hunger strike in Queens Park in Toronto.)In case you don't know,
Stefan has asked for the following from The Canadian government:(1) The waitlist must be eliminated by November 1, (2) There must be ABA in schools, (3) They need to work with Ottawa to develop a national autism strategy and get more funding for Ontario and (4) Therapists need to be regulated.
I believe Stephan hasn't eaten in 13 days now.
Stephan is the same Man who walked from Toronto to Ottawa,
through two of the worst snowstorms of the season,
to bring the issue of Autism to the attention of the federal government.And now, he's sitting there, outside, 24 hours a day.
http://www.ontarioautismcoalition.com/
My heart drops whenever I see him.
Do you all think that a pile of e-mails
from us all to him would help?If there is enough interest, I'd be willing to collect them,
print them out, and Fed Ex them to him.I wish that I could be there.
He deserves an army.I know I need to rise up and fight.
I need to speak up, make a fuss, and get things done.It's hard, when there's so little time, and so much to do,
and it never stops, and you are so tired you can't even think straight.But I can't imagine, right now, a more worthwhile cause.
I should take my daughter to see my MP.
I want to help.Anyone in Toronto?
Please go visit Stephan for me.
Please get him something, he needs.
Make a sign and stand with him for a while.
Keep him company.I want to change things.
Every day I am thinking of him,
and today I will take action.My promise.
