Thank you to Michelle and Justin for making a difference by inviting the CBC and the nation into your lives.
I spent some time this morning composing comments for the CBC. Anyone else wishing to do so will find the option at http://www.cbc.ca/national/yourturn/index.html
Thanks.
DianeDiane TMemberTo add two cents to Avery's advice: If you can't find someone qualified and available nearby, consider looking further away.
It used to be that there weren't bona fide consultants who lived in B.C. Most of us brought in our consultant from elsewhere – usually south of the border.
This is still an option that anyone can consider – especially those of us who live outside the Lower Mainland, since we would be asking any Vancouver-based consultant to travel anyway. It is more expensive to have to fly in your consultant, but if you can join together with another family you can share airfare. The consultant can make one trip to see two families.
Having a consultant from away often involves a workshop model of consulting. Our consultant's original visit was three days in length. At the end of three days, we had a complete program, and our family and team were well prepared to deliver our program. After that, we usually saw our consultant for two days every three months. In between visits, we communicated regularly by e-mail, phone, and occasionally video.
Be creative. Just remember that it's really important that your consultant be qualified and experienced.

Fifth year, First Consultant, Also Loving Every Minute Of ItDiane TMemberAnother .02 (pun intended) about cheaper alternatives:
Clear mac tac can be purchased in large rolls at department stores for about $10, and can be used to laminate cards, icons, etc. (with thanks to A.)
Ink-jet cartridges can be refilled. There is a company called Island Ink-Jet that sells printer-specific kits, and which has outlets both on Vancouver Island and in the Lower Mainland. Our printer cartridges still need to be replaced every once in a while, but refilling either the black or colour cartridges for our inkjet costs about $7 compared to the $45 replacement cost.
Diane TMemberHi all.
This posting is just a reminder of the Behavioural Therapist Workshop being offered Saturday, July 19 in Nanoose Bay, ten minutes north of Nanaimo.
This workshop is not yet full, so a great opportunity still exists for Islanders to benefit from this offering without the trouble and expense of travelling to the Lower Mainland.
The registration fee is only $25, and the workshop is being led by two experienced senior therapists who have trained – and continue to train – under bona fide Lovaas-protocol behavioural consultants.
The registration form is available at http://www.featbc.org/downloads/abtw.pdf
Since the workshop is not yet full, payment will now be accepted at the door from those who fax a registration form to 604.534.9527 or who call 604.534.6956 to give their registration information.
See you Saturday.
Thanks.
