The Mid-Island ASBC Community Group meeting planned for Wednesday, January 12 has been postponed.

We all travel a fair way to get together (and our speaker is coming from the Lower Mainland), and the forecast calls for more snow on Wednesday.

    We will reschedule for February.

    Thanks.

The January Mid-Island ASBC Community Group meeting will be held Wednesday evening of next week.

Due to a hiccup in the room-booking process, we are unable to advertise commitment of location yet.

    Date: Wednesday, January 12
    Time: 6-8 p.m.
Location: Nanoose Bay (room to be announced ASAP)
Topic: Almost Dried Up: Is Full Recovery From Autism Really Possible?
    Presenter: Jenny Obando, mother

Jenny was the first of three speakers at the December presentation given at the North Shore ASBC meeting.

Tamara Leger, North Shore ASBC Group facilitator, described Jenny's presentation this way:
A powerful, positive and enlightening evening about beating the odds and coming out "looking indistinguishable" on the other end.

Jenny Obando will tell her story of her son’s hard-won recovery, using visual examples, on how their family tackled the tough reality that is Autism. She will share with us what went into her successful mix including her son’s starting points, challenges and her family’s personal sacrifices in overcoming her first child’s diagnosis and what life looks like at the other end. She also has a second child recently diagnosed who is in the beginning stages of an ABA program.

This will be an open meeting. All are welcome: parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, therapists, judges, politicians and service providers.

We will also be having a mini swap meet. If you have new or used materials you wish to loan, trade or sell, please feel welcome to bring them along.

We were asked by another family to post what follows:
    =================================================

On this black day for Canada (not just our children) I would like to thank the Auton families for what their efforts have done for me.

My toddler was diagnosed just over two years ago. Thanks to the funding I received I have been able to afford to run a full Lovaas ABA program and my child is well on the way to a full recovery.

I know that many of your children will suffer their whole lives for the lack of support, services and funding for autism treatment in Canada, but I thought, today, you might all like to hear that you have saved at least one child. Thank you Sabrina, Jean, Michelle and all Auton families from the bottom of my heart. We will fight on.

I am asking someone else to post this for me to protect the anonymity of my child.
