Ditto to what Jen said big time.

" . . . but I did have some emails that were more discouraging, and I felt extremely guilty for posting on the FEAT page"

Please don't let a few ignorant people discourage you from continuing to do the good that you are doing. "Breaking the rules" is occasionally the only way to get the message out !!

    All the best

    Catherine,

Congratulations !! That is wonderful that he is doing so well.

Is there anything else that you have done to explain his growth ? Did you change his diet at all ?

I'm very new to ABA, but I cannot possibly imagine how ABA could harm any child, whether autism is involved or not. ABA is one on one teaching that will allow the child to catch up to children his age. If he moves through the levels super quickly he may not need it anymore, but it certainly isn't going to effect his brain in any negative way in my opinion.

I had not seen this posted yet.

I recieved this e-mail this morning for an ACT event that I am attending tomorrow. It says that there will be an important announcement made by Minsters Linda Reid and Tom Christensen with regard to Autism "support" by the B.C. Governement. I truely hope that the "announcement" really is an "important" one.

Here is the important part of the e-mail :

Dear Registrants for October 20th Focus on Research Event,

October 20th is shaping up to be a very exciting day. As some of you will know this important event, featuring Drs. Geraldine Dawson and Sally Rogers, has completely sold out in the Asia-Pacific Hall. Those of you who registered too late for the main hall, have already been made aware that you will be seated in the overflow room downstairs watching the presentation on a large screen.

The Ministry of Children and Family Development have asked ACT if they can use the Asia-Pacific Hall during the lunch break to make an important announcement to you regarding Autism Research & Intervention. I am not at liberty to give any details but I would urge you to have a quick lunch and to be back in your seats by 12:40 for an announcement that is of great importance to the Autism Community in BC.

    Sincerely,

    Deborah Pugh
    Director Research & Training
    ACT – Autism Community Training

My wife and I are thinking about going. If anyone is planning on going OR has been to one of these in the past we would love to hear from you about your impressions or thoughts.

    Wow,

I bet that felt good to get off your chest !!

I'm not sure if that was directly or indirectly aimed at me so let me see if I can take a shot at both.

I hope that this forum isn't one were you have to fully explain yourself every time you post. Your post makes me think that you do.

    Directly:

To make it clear, we will be using SCIENCE as our MAIN FOCUS in our intervention for our son. Thanks to FEAT (as well as tonne of other sites) we are currently seeking a consultant who is solid in the science of ABA. This is proving to be a very very tough excercise (no availability) but we are steadfast in our desire to have this at the core of his therapy.

As mentioned though we feel we would be negligent if we did not explore other forms of intervention that many parents (in books by Maurice, Hamilton, Seroussi, and now Mccarthy) are claiming to have helped greatly as a compliment to their scienced based therapy.

    Indirectly :

Where and when did Mccarthy say on Oprah that the "dietery supplements" (as you called them) were the BASIS of her therepy for her son ? Where and when did she claim that "all she listened to" was her mommy instinct ?

I haven't read her book yet, but as a new spokesperson for tacanow, I'm pretty sure that any dietary or suppliments intervention that she tried would have been in addition to a science based therapy program.

Your post sounds exactly like what I heard from our pediatrician. Concentrate on a solid scienced based therapy and forget about the rest. Well I'm very very happy for you that your child was one of the lucky 46%, but I (and Mccarthy apparently) would like to improve those odds as much as possible by exploring some biomedical therapies to add to our program of intervention.

If you have a minute, maybe read something that you may not have seen about what SCIENCE thinks about what parents are trying to fix or combat with this biomedical stuff :
