Further to Sharon's posting (Aug 11th) about resources for hiring students as ABA tutors: we've posted three times on the UBC job board with some success (our veteran ABA tutor was hired from UBC). However, we received more applications from qualified people the third time around after we posted a detailed description of the job. A lot of students who apply don't know much about ABA (understandably) and sometimes have misconceptions. We found it helped to be clear on what autism is, what the work involves, and what skills are required. If you like, email us and we'll send you our posting. It isn't a magic formula, but it may give you a place to start. BTW, even after beefing up the posting, we still got a few applications from people who met none of the qualifications. That's to be expected.

We're looking for an experienced therapist to join our team to work with our 4 1/2 year old boy. Our son is verbal and in his second year of ABA therapy. He's doing very well, he attends preschool, soccer school, and he loves his therapy sessions at home. If you have strong play skills, you'll find it fun and rewarding to work with him. We live near Fraser and 19th Ave. Our consultant is Bohdanna Popowycz Kvam.

We have some questions about taxes. Revenue Canada is saying we can't claim ABA expenses from last year. Has anyone had the same experience? If you've successfully claimed ABA expenses, under what category did you claim them? Lastly, can you recommend an accountant?

    Thanks,

UBC Job Board for finding newbie therapists

If you're looking for therapists, we've had some success by posting ads on the UBC online job board: https://www.careersonline.ubc.ca/employer/

The cost is $15.00 per ad, and they'll run it for a week or more. Make the ad informative so that students who apply know what the work involves. Make it clear that applicants need to have experience working with children.
